Carbon-Free Mobility conference - March 2009
Conference Overview
"Carbon-Free Mobility" explored the use of PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) as a tool to reduce carbon emissions from transport.
Several California cities are looking at personal transit as a complement to mass transit as a more realistic way to meet climate objectives than by mass transit alone.
Where: Oakland, California
When: March 6, 2009
Organized by ATRA with support from Kimley-Horn, Jakes Associates, and CyberTran International.
Topics
- Keynote address by noted land use planner Peter Calthorpe
- Energy and greenhouse gas emissions
- VMT and mode share
- Federal transport policy in the Obama administration
- What are PRT and Podcars?
- PRT technical issues and examples
- Local initiatives in Fresno, Santa Cruz, Hacienda, Milpitas, etc.
Discussion
The challenge of reducing carbon emissions is upon us. A new worry in our
lives has strange initials – GHG – short for Greenhouse Gases.
Like cholesterol and inflation, GHGs are no-no’s -- the less of them, the better.
Ways to reduce them include moving around by foot, bike, transit, plug-in
cars and green mini-rentals. How are tomorrow’s adults getting around in
Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco today? What about in 2020?
Walking, biking and transit are cool again. They work together well and give
the added bonus of more health and smaller waists. New mobility regimens
and paradigms are available. Modern transit includes driverless and more
frequent BART. Even more exotic are small-scale pod-networks classically
known as PRT (personal rapid transit). Soon we will have districts oriented
around small-scale PRT stations that are place-makers in the ‘Hood. What is
PRT-Oriented Development? What is a Pod-Town?
